The Ferrari F1/89 can be considered the ancestor of modern Formula 1 cars. First of all because it was the first to adopt a 7-speed sequential semi-automatic gearbox plus reverse driven by the paddle-shift on the steering wheel, when at the time everyone used the longitudinal model with actuator plumber. But another absolute new feature introduced by John Barnard on this car was the long nose which earned it the nickname "duck". Equipped with a monocoque frame in kevlar and carbon fiber composite, with a weight of 505 kg and a wheelbase of 2830 mm, the Ferrari 640 was fitted with Goodyear tires and was equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.5 V12 engine. The F1-89, as it had been renamed, won on its debut in the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix which took place on the Jacarepagua circuit, despite the lack of reliability shown in the winter tests. On this same car Gerhard Berger had the most serious accident of his career, at the Imola circuit, on the fourth lap of the San Marino Grand Prix. The Austrian pulled straight to the Tambourine because of the detachment of the front wing, impacting the protective wall and remaining imprisoned in an unconscious state in the cockpit. To save his life was certainly the immediate intervention of the Lions of the CEA and then that of the doctor of the FIA Sid Watkins and Dr. Domenico Salcito. Berger later won in Portugal, while Mansell won the Hungaroring race. At the end of the year the Englishman finished fourth in the championship and Berger seventh. Ferrari was third in the Manufacturers' classification.
