After a disappointing 1986 season with the F1 / 86, the Ferrari design team of John Barnard, Gustav Brunner and Harvey Postlethwaite designed a completely new single-seater for 1987, the F1 / 87. The aerodynamics were revised, and innovations were also made to the V12 engine, which received a different bank angle (90 ° instead of 120 °). Although Ferrari proved less competitive than McLaren, Williams and Lotus, Gerhard Berger managed to win the last two GPs of the season, in Japan and Australia, breaking a fast of victories that had lasted since the 1985 German GP.
