At the end of 1967 the regulations of the Sport World Championship suddenly changed, imposing a maximum displacement of 3 liters, thus putting the Ferrari 330 P4 out of the game. In 1968 there were no official Ferrari participations in the world championship, but at the end of that year, the Maranello company, somewhat surprisingly, announced a 3000cc prototype, which was presented to the press at the Hotel Real Fini in Modena. The engine, derived from the 312 of F1, was a 2900cc V12, which was also used in F1. The 312P was presented in spyder configuration, and debuted at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 1969. For the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, the 312P was fitted with a beautiful berlinetta body, with a hemispherical roof. Two were the registered specimens, but with not very exciting results. Ferrari, having lost the chance to compete for the title, gave up the last two races of 1969, at Watkins Glen and in Austria. The future of endurance racing was in any case the 5-liter Sports class, where Ferrari would take up the challenge with the 512S, setting aside the 312P. Two 312P’s were sold to NART, which in 1970 won the Prototype class at Daytona. The record for sporting longevity went to chassis 0872, which after the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans was fitted with three different spyder bodywork designs, ending its career very late at the 1974 Le Mans 24 Hours.
