The task of designing the first A.L.F.A. it was given by Ugo Stella to Giuseppe Merosi in September 1909, even before the Italian Automobile Company Darraq was transformed into the Lombard Fabbrica Automobili Company. The chassis was spars and cross members, and the engine was a 4084cc in-line 4 cylinder with 42 horsepower at 2200 rpm. Until 1913 there were about 200 chassis assembled, in four different series plus the competition versions, with two-seater open bodywork, lightened from 1000 to 870 kg, which took part with good results in various competitions, including the 1911 Targa Florio.
