With the arrival of the new Group 5 regulations, BMW prepared a "Silhouette" version of the CSL, although the E9 series had reached the end of its commercial career. In 1976 BMW prepared five cars: one official, one for Schnitzer, one for Peter Gregg in the USA (IMSA and Trans-Am) and one for Hermetite. The competition from the Porsche 935 was too strong for CSL, which in 1976 won the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 6 Hours of Silverstone, the 1000km of the Nurburgring, the 6 Hours of Zeltweg and the 1000km of Kyalami.
