For the new 55, presented in 1968, Daf used the Renault Cléon four-cylinder, an 1100cc which had proved efficient on the R8. Its power was 50 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The four-cylinder ensured the performance of a middle-class car; the transmission remained the usual known Variomatic. The 55 was also available as a coupé (55 CL), break, combi and van and remained in production until 1972. From 1971, a sports version called the Marathon was marketed, whose 1100cc engine gained 10 horsepower.
