The Cherokee XJ was one of the first 4x4s to be currently used in cities. However, it remained a true off-roader: two rigid axles, short gear ratios and self-locking differentials. Introduced in 1984, it remained in production until 2001. The most pleasant engine remains the 4-liter 6-cylinder (178-183 horsepower), produced from 1988 to 2001. Other engines were the 2.1 turbodiesel (1984-1990) and the 2.5 turbodiesel (1997-2001).
