Already during the Phase 1 period the Renault Mégane had had a Renault Sport version. Phase 2 then experienced several increasingly sporty developments, to arrive, in 2008, at the R26.R, presented at the London Motor Show. Lighter than the R26 and more performing, the R26.R was a car with extreme characteristics, suitable for track days. The R26.R weighed a whopping 123 kg less than the R26 (total 1232 kg). The 1998cc 4-cylinder in-line turbo engine delivered 230 horsepower at 5500 rpm, allowing a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6 ”and a top speed of 235 km / h. On 23 June 2008 a Mégane R26.R with Renault Sport's tester Vincent Bayle at the wheel set the record in its category by lapping at the Nurburgring in 8'17 ", which is 19" less than the previous best time, which belonged to a German car.
