After the 309 GTI 16, the replacement was eagerly awaited by the public. It took the more attractive forms of the 306 S16, presented in February 1993. This sports version stood at the top of the range with its 155hp 2-litre 16-valve engine, later reduced to 150 in 1994 due to anti-pollution regulations. The public of enthusiasts judged the power of the engine not adequate for the type of car. In October 1996 a new version came out with the engine increased to 167hp and 6-speed gearbox. The first series continued to be produced until April 1997, when the phase-2 was introduced.
