In an edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans characterized by a rather nonsense sporting regulation based on fuel consumption, Ligier hoped to reap the Matra legacy. And instead it was the team of John Wyer, who lined up two Mirage GR8s with a Ford 3000cc motor to win the race, with Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, who bate Lafosse and Chasseuil's Ligier JS2. Third place went to the other Mirage, driven by Schuppan and Jaussaud.
