The ES30 project, which led to the SZ, did not meet the hoped-for success. The mechanical relationship with the 75 did not convince the buyers, made even more skeptical by the poor level of assembly of the various components and by a very particular line. To relaunch production, Alfa Romeo invented a roadster in 1991, called the RZ, which had the same mechanical characteristics as the SZ. Even more expensive than the SZ, the RZ was even less successful.
