With the PC4 model Penske was able to make a significant leap in quality. Designed by Geoff Ferris, a Penske designer for several seasons, the car, equipped with a Ford Cosworth engine and Hewland gearbox, had a very low monocoque chassis and in-line radiators flanking the engine. The initial configuration included a large muzzle, which was later replaced by a more traditional layout; the pace changed over time as well as some aerodynamic details. The PC4 made its appearance in the 1976 Swedish GP, where it was unable to complete even one lap; already at the French GP, John Watson finished third but was disqualified for a slight irregularity in the spoiler. The season continued with excellent results, culminating in the victory at the Austrian GP, again with Watson. Penske finished 5th in the 1976 Constructors' World Championship. In subsequent years the PC4s were sold to private teams such as the German ATS that changed some aerodynamic features.
