For the 1988 endurance season, Spice Engineering, which for years had been reaping successes in the smallest class of Group C, developed the SE88C, which had the same chassis as the 1987 SE87C, but could benefit from a series of mechanical and aerodynamic refinements. The new body was designed by Graham Humphrys and developed in the wind tunnel of the University of Southampton. Despite the change in technical regulations that required a lower ground effect, the SE88C turned out to be on average three to four seconds faster than the SE87C.
