For the 1971 Formula 1 season Lotus decided to continue to focus on the 72 model, with the appropriate modifications, including a rear wing of a different design on the 72C and and new suspensions on the 72D. In addition to this, Lotus tried to introduce into F.1 a specific version of the 56 that had raced in the United States. This single-seater, powered by a Pratt & Whitney turbine with four-wheel drive, was tested intensively by Fittipaldi at Snetterton, Silverstone and Hethel, showing some improvements but remaining fundamentally a failure. This cost Lotus a considerable amount of resources and also time.
Swede Reine Wisell made his Formula 1 debut in 1970, with the official Lotus. In 1971 he was seen again at the wheel of the Lotus 72C and 72D and at the British GP at Silverstone he had the opportunity to drive the turbine-powered 56B. Qualifying 19th, he had to pit at least twice, finishing the race without being classified, 11 laps behind the winner.
