Its style also made it popular as a city vehicle: yet, the Suzuki Vitara, unlike a competitor like the Toyota RAV4, was a tough and pure off-road vehicle, with the chassis and mechanical characteristics typical of a 4x4. Produced from 1990 to 1998, it had numerous engines, from Mazda and Peugeot diesels, to a 1600cc petrol (8 or 16 valves) up to the rare V6 produced from 1995 to 1998. In 1992 a five-door version with extended wheelbase was also introduced.
