By now full-time in Formula 1, Renault still had another onerous goal to pursue: winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Having failed in 1977, the French make had been forced to schedule another entering in 1978; in that edition Renault found Porsche again, which had prepared an evolution version of the 936, called the 936/78. For the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1978, Renault tested a lot, fielding the Alpine-Renault A442, a further refined car. If in the 1977 edition the Alpines had suffered from a lack of reliability, in 1978 they finally achieved that success that had been pursued for years. It was the A442B driven by Jaussaud and Pironi to win the race. At that point, Renault abandoned endurance racing to continue Formula 1 and also rallying programs. The winning car of 1978 is characterized by a particular transparent aerodynamic protection mounted on the passenger compartment area.
