For Ferrari, the 500 F2 was a particularly important single-seater because it was the first car to host a non-12-cylinder engine and because it allowed Alberto Ascari to become the first F1 world champion with the Maranello company. Formula 1, born in 1950, was already in a technical crisis at the end of 1951, especially due to the withdrawal of Alfa Romeo. The International Federation therefore decided to admit Formula 2 cars to the start of the 1952 championship. Ferrari could already count on a suitable engine, an in-line 4-cylinder designed by Aurelio Lampredi in the 2.5 and 2-liter versions. The new car, dubbed the 500 F2, had virtually no rivals in 1952 and 1953, clinching 14 victories out of 15 grands prix. Ascari was world champion in both seasons. Mike Hawthorn and Piero Taruffi also achieved victories with the 500 F2. A special, longer, aerodynamic nose was also designed for fast circuits. The power of the 1985cc 4-cylinder, which in 1952 was around 165 horsepower, in 1953 went up to 185 horsepower. The dominance of the 500 F2 was only interrupted by a change in regulations at the end of 1953, which set the maximum displacement of the 2500cc single-seaters, making the 500 F2s quite outpaced.
