The last Toleman single-seater (the team having started in F.2 racing back in 1980 as a constructor) was the TG185 of F.1 for the 1985 season. Described as an updated version of the TG184 of 1984, with which among other things a young Ayrton had made his debut Senna, however, had a new monocoque, more refined aerodynamics with a fully faired engine, a Hart 4-cylinder turbo engine and a gearbox developed by Toleman itself. Tire supply problems prevented the team from participating in the first GPs of the season and only one car was fielded until the summer. Starting from the following year, Toleman was sold to Benetton, with a consequent change of name. Teo Fabi and Piercarlo Ghinzani piloted the TG185.
With the TG185 Teo Fabi was the protagonist of good performances but almost always the lack of reliability of the single-seater ended up penalizing him. At the German GP, at the Nurburgring, the Italian driver scored a nice pole position. His best result was a 12th place at the Italian GP in Monza. Fabi also remained in the team in 1986 and 1987, when the team was no longer called Toleman but Benetton.
