The company executives' car: the W126 series, introduced in September 1979, reaffirmed Mercedes' leadership among the great class sedans. Initially marketed in versions 280. 280SE (6 cylinders), 380 and 500SE (V8), the W126 was gradually enriched with further engines and trim levels. The restyling of September 1985 introduced the new 260, 300SEL, 560SEL and 300SDL. Extremely elegant especially with the coupé bodywork, the W126 had sports versions prepared especially by AMG. Production of the W126 continued until the autumn of 1991, when the new S-class (type W140) had already been out for a few months.
