One of the most peculiar Formula 1 of the seventies was the March 711 of 1971, designed by Frank Costin, who had already experimented with avant-garde aerodynamic solutions in his years in Vanwall. Conceptually, the 711 looked a lot like the Lotus 72 but the aerodynamics were even more original. The engine was the classic Ford Cosworth V8. It was Ronnie Peterson in particular who achieved the best results with the 711, when the team managed to secure the latest generation Cosworth engines. De Adamich, Allen, Barber, Bell, Beuttler, Cannon, Galli, Jarier, Lauda, Love, Max, Mazet, Perrot, Pescarolo, Rollinson, Siffert and Soler-Roig drove the 711, too.

Ronnie Peterson competed in the 1971 season at the wheel of the Works March 711, powered by Ford Cosworth and Alfa Romeo V8. He obtained some valuable second places and at the end of the F1 world championship season he was second with 33 points.
