The successful BMW 5 series was restyled in 1981, when the E12 type gave way to the E28. The displacement scheme was rationalized and adapted to the changing needs of the market. There were also the smallest (518 with or without injection), the medium (520) and the more powerful 525i and 528i injection. In 1983 a 2693cc (525e) engine was introduced and diesels (524d and 524td) also made an appearance. In 1984 the 535i arrived, followed a year later by an even sportier version, the M535i, which took up the tradition of the previous series car. But performance at the absolute top of the category was obtained by the M5, presented in 1984, with a 6 cylinder capable of delivering 286 horsepower. Series 3 model E28 went out of production in 1987 to make way for a completely renewed series 5, the E34.
