For the 1970 world championship, Ferrari and Porsche accepted the challenge of the new regulations, with the approval of the 25 units required by the 5-liter Sport standards. The 512S was the model that Ferrari would bring to the track in the 1970 season. Although powerful, the car found itself in difficulty in front of the Porsche 917, more reliable and stronger than a whole testing season. The 512S achieved a good victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring by beating Steve McQueen at the wheel of the Porsche 908/2 in an exciting final, but during the year the results were rather disappointing, despite the attempt to lighten the car with a spyder body. At Le Mans the 512S received a particular aerodynamic long tail. In addition to the official team, the "S" also ran with private teams, such as Scuderia Filipinetti, Ecurie Francorchamps, Escuderia Montjuich, Picchio Rosso, Georg Loos and others. Ferrari abandoned the development of the 5-liter engine to focus on the new 3-liter 312 PB; some 512S were updated with M specifications for 1971, while other chassis continued to compete with the old S bodywork.
