Designed by Dave Baldwin, the 1977 Fittipaldi F5 proved poorly competitive, even though Emerson Fittipaldi took fourth place in the Netherlands. Baldwin left the team even before the end of the season. For 1978 the engineer Caliri (Fly Studio) was commissioned to study a development of the car. Many changes were made to the aerodynamics and suspension. The F5A was piloted by Emerson Fittipaldi who managed to place second in Brazil; Fittipaldi finished in seventh place in the constructors' championship. The F5A was also used in part in 1979 when the team was struggling with the problems shown by the new F6. Meanwhile, two F5A chassis were acquired by the British Mopar team and one of these was modified by Colin Bennett in 1980, taking the name of F5B.
