For the 1986 Formula 1 season the Minardi team modified the M85 which had debuted the previous year. The new car, the M185B, still suffered from excessive weight, but the behavior on the track was better. Two examples of the M185B were made, while a modified M85 was used as a reserve. The best result of the year was Alessandro Nannini's 14th place in Mexico. The other M185B drivers were Andrea De Cesaris and Pierluigi Martini.
