In 1966, Saab was able to start a series production of a small sportscar with plastic bodywork, whose studies had been going on since 1956 with the first experimental version of the Sonett. The Sonett II was equipped with a 3-cylinder 841cc and 60 horsepower engine, which was judged insufficient. This unit was soon replaced by a 65 horsepower Ford 4 cylinder. The Sonett II remained in production until 1970.
