The 1981 500cc season started with Yamaha riders Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene as the favourites. However, it was Randy Mamola who started strong with the Suzuki but during the year the talent of Marco Lucchinelli emerged who with his Suzuki managed to win 5 of the 14 races, winning the world championship with 105, ahead of Mamola (94) and Roberts (74).
