The forfeit of the official Porsche team at the 1984 Le Mans 24 Hours gave numerous private Porsche teams the chance to win. The main competitor of the Porsches was the works Lancia team with the LC2 Group C, which had shown considerable pace without being able to count on a reliability equal to that of the Porsche 956’s. Jaguar was still no match for Porsche and Lancia. It was a Joest car won the race, with Henri Pescarolo and Klaus Ludwig at the wheel. Joest, who had never won Le Mans as a driver, thus won as a team manager. The Joest team would make it again in 1985 with the same car, beating the official Porsches.
