After the experience gathered with the 78 of 1977 (which also ran in the first part of 1978), Lotus presented the 79, a refined and even more efficient car, which allowed Mario Andretti to win the 1978 F1 world championship. The team's other driver, Ronnie Peterson, rounded off the success of the Lotus. Unfortunately Peterson died following the accident at the Italian GP.
