The Ferrari 712 for the Can-Am championship was developed starting from the 512M chassis 1010. The car made its debut at Watkins Glen in the fourth race of the 1971 Can-Am, with Mario Andretti. This was the only participation, under the management of the official Ferrari team. The car was later sold to NART and used in the 1972 Can-Am series. The 712/71 had a V12 engine delivering 680 horsepower.
