In 1977 Patrick Head designed the first real Williams, after previous models had been based on Iso and Hesketh. The FW06 had a conventional monocoque and suspension system and the usual Cosworth DFV. Three examples were built; the pilot for the 1978 season was Alan Jones. The FW06 was also used in the first part of 1979, waiting for the FW07 to be ready. The FW06 was clearly overtaken by the ground-effect cars, but proved to be quite effective, allowing Williams to take some important placings, such as a second place for Jones at the 1978 USA West GP. The FW06s were then sold and used in the British F. Aurora.
