In designing the complex all-wheel drive 63 for 1969, Lotus could at least count on the experience accumulated with the 56 project. The 63 obviously had much in common with the contemporary 64 designed for Indianapolis. The Cosworth DFV engine was reversed, with the clutch behind the driver and the gearbox positioned to the side. Lotus main drivers Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt never liked the 63. Mario Andretti, Jo Bonnier and John Miles also drove the 63.
