1981 was an important year for Ligier: for the first time the team entered the Formula 1 championship as Talbot-Ligier, and the agreement with this large automotive group allowed it to obtain the supply of Matra V12 engines, rather dated but still effective. Jacques Laffite won in Austria and Canada at the wheel of the JS17 which was also used in the first part of 1982.
