After the departure of many members of the team, the Shadow found herself in obvious difficulty. In the spring of 1978, the first ground effect Shadow arrived, the DN9. Designed by Tony Southgate, the work was picked up by John Baldwin. For 1979 the DN9B version was prepared, developed by Richard Owen and John Gentry, with different side pods and revised suspensions. During the two seasons, the DN9 did not achieve significant results. The DN9 / DN9B was piloted by Elio De Angelis, Clay Regazzoni and Hans Stuck. One of the DN9s was handled by Team Interscope, but Danny Ongais failed to qualify.
