After the positive experience with the first 936 in 1976, which had earned Porsche their third overall victory at Le Mans, the Stuttgart company presented an updated version for 1977. The 936/77 had a different and more aerodynamic body. The 2142 turbo engine, derived from that of the 1974 Carrera RSR prototype, gained some further power. The car took a historic victory at the 1977 Le Mans 24 Hours with Barth, Haywood and Ickx. A 936/77 was also used at Le Mans in 1978, together with the more updated 936/78.
