At the 1962 German GP, Ferrari fielded a revamped version of the 156, with many changes affecting the suspension and chassis. Aesthetically, the new 156 was quite different from the car that had won the 1961 world championship. The first full season for the new 156 was 1963, the year in which John Surtees joined Ferrari. The car proved competitive, although there was nothing to be done against Jim Clark and the groundbreaking Lotus 25.
