For 1996 the Minardi team, short of budget, had to be content with updating the car from the previous year. Once the possibility of using the 1995 Yamaga V10 engines had disappeared, the team from Faenza continued with the Ford ED V8s with Magneti Marelli electronics. The engine underwent a couple of evolutions during the season, with the most recent (ED3) ensuring an increase in power and maximum rpm. Several drivers raced for Minardi in 1996: Pedro Lamy, Giancarlo Fisichella, Tarso Marques and Giovanni Lavaggi. No placement was achieved in the points zone. The best result was Fisichella's eighth place in Canada.
