For the 1931 season, the new “Formula Libre” regulations no longer placed limits on the maximum displacements of the engines. Alfa Romeo, without having the budget to design a new engine, thought of the solution of mounting two units on one car. The engines chosen were those of the 6C 1750 GS with volumetric compressor, with 115 horsepower. The right motor transmitted motion to the right wheel, while the left controlled the left wheel. The Type A proved immediately competitive but in the Monza GP practice Luigi Arcangeli had a fatal accident. The team, under the pressure of the fascist regime, prepared a spare car for the race; at the wheel of this car Nuvolari got off to a good start but had to retire after an hour. The only victory of the season, however, came only on August 16, at the Coppa Acerbo with Campari. There were four examples produced.
