During the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship, despite the supremacy of Williams and Nigel Mansell, champion with five races in advance, a contender to the stricking season of Frank Williams' team was the McLaren MP4 / 7. Ayrton Senna brought it three times to success, while his partner Gerhard Berger clinched two victories. This car, designed by Neil Oatley, in the version seen in the first parto of the season was named MP4 / 7A. A second version, the MP4 / 7B, was instead provided with experimental active suspensions, however not particularly reliable. The two innovative elements were the semi-automatic gearbox, developed in collaboration with the TAG, and the electronically controlled accelerator without control cable. Another detail was the dashboard with electronic instruments instead of the more obsolete and analogic ones.
