The Lotus 77 was an innovative car with numerous experimental solutions, on which several designers worked: Geoff Aldridge, Martin Ogilvie, Len Terry and also the brilliant Tony Southgate. In the first part of the 1976 F1 season, the Lotus 77, powered by the traditional Cosworth engine, proved to be very difficult to develop, but then over the months the team managed to find some efficiency and reliability, also allowing Andretti to win the final GP of the season in Japan. The 77 was however left aside and the Lotus team focussed on to the new 78 project for the 1977 season.
