Designed for the 1976 Formula 1 season, the Ferrari 312 T2 featured the same mechanical solutions as the 1975 world champion 312 T. One of the differences was the elimination of the large air intake behind the driver, now prohibited by the regulations. Ferrari started the 1976 season with the old 312 T, but starting from the Spanish GP, Lauda and Regazzoni had the new 312 T2 at their disposal. Only the accident at the German GP prevented Lauda from winning the drivers' world championship again. The 312 T2 was also used in 1977 when, further updated, it allowed Lauda to win his second championship, with victories in South Africa, Germany and Holland. The T2 also took part in the first two races of 1978, before being replaced by the 312 T3.
