The engine of the Maserati A6 1500GT was also suitable for sports use: compact, light and easy to set up, it was ideal for the Sport 2000 class. Maserati then created a competition version, increasing the displacement from 1488 to 1978cc. In the summer of 1947, after the Maserati brothers left the company to found OSCA, engineer Alberto Massimino transformed the A6 1500GT into a two-seater sport, which took the name of 2000 Sport or A6 GCS. The A6 GCS made its debut at the Modena circuit in 1947, where it immediately won with Alberto Ascari. Until 1953 the car achieved many successes in Europe but also in the United States. A total of 13 copies were made.
