Launched in March 1984, the second generation of the Golf GTI proved to suffer from the competition. At the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen relaunched with a 139 horsepower 16-valve GTI, very aggressive especially at high revs. A restyling was carried out in July 1989 and a compressor version, called the 160 horsepower G60, was presented in April 1990. There were numerous special versions: GTI Cup (September 1987), GTI 16S Match (May 1988), GTI Edition One (December 1989). The GTI II series went out of production in 1992.
