The first Volkswagen Passat of 1973 was an Audi 80 equipped with a fastback rear with or without a tailgate or break. In 1980 the Passat moved away from the initial base, proposing a range of 3, 5 doors and break. The 5-door version was called Santana. In 1985 the car was modernized with single-piece headlights, wraparound bumpers, thicker, lower positioned side strips and wider rear lights for the sedan versions.
