Looking for a successor for the TR3, Triumph was faced with the need for a project to be developed from scratch. The old TR3 had an obsolete chassis and it was very difficult to think of obtaining a simple update. For the bodywork design Triumph hired Giovanni Michelotti, a prestigious designer, who designed a pleasant and modern line, destined to characterize the image of the Triumph for several years. The TR4 was equipped with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine for 100 horsepower. Production, which began in 1961, stopped in 1967 after over 70,000 units built.
