Alfa Romeo returned as a constructor to Formula 1 in 1979 with the 177, which, however, was already largely obsolete. The new car, the 179, was ready for the end of the 1979 season at Monza, and a new version was developed by 1980. The 179 also ran in 1981, the year in which it showed some competitiveness, in the 179C and 179D versions, the latter revised and corrected by Gérard Ducarouge. At the end of his career, the 179 was used to test a carbon fiber monocoque and also a 1500cc V8 turbo engine. The 179 pilots Mario Andretti, Vittorio Brambilla, Patrick Depailler, Andrea De Cesaris and Bruno Giacomelli.
