Properly, the correct name of this road going Ford should simply be Mk.III and not GT40 Mk.III, just as the 1966 competition car was called the Mk.II and not GT40 Mk.II. Whatever, the Ford MK.III was conceived to be the definitive road sports car, with the competition engine weakened to 306 bhp, silencers and more civilized interiors. The central gear lever made it possible to produce cars for the English market. Ford trade policies, however, soon ended the program and out of a projected first batch of twenty units only seven were actually built, between 1967 and 1969.
