The Alfetta GT was presented less than two years after the launch of the sedan, when at least 65,000 examples were already in circulation. After this success, Alfa presented the Gran Turismo version with a body designed by the creativity of Giorgetto Giugiaro and by Alfa's own designers. With a reduced wheelbase from 2510 to 2400mm, the shape of the Alfetta gave the sense of movement with a remarkable dynamism. In the Alfetta GT coupé, in addition to using the same mechanical groups as the sedan, the weight distribution was maintained at 50% on each axle, to ensure ideal balance and excellent road handling. The Alfetta GT was a car with decidedly brilliant characteristics, destined for those clients who wanted a safe and high quality sportscar. The 1.8 engine appeared on the 1974 Alfetta coupé and was presented to the press in June in Fonteblanda (Grosseto). Initially the car, equipped with the 1779cc type AR01608S engine (122HP), was simply known as the Alfetta GT (type 116.10). Quite light (1050 kgs) the car could do 180kph. With the 1975 series, the denomination changed to Alfetta GT 1.8. Production of the 1800cc stopped in May 1976 but continued until 1978 in certain countries such as Switzerland and Japan in order to run out of stocks. Meanwhile, the GT 1.6 and GTV 2000 were also introduced.
