Designed by Patrick Head and team's new bid Adrian Newey, who came from March, the Williams FW14 was the first single-seater from the British team to adopt the semiautomatic gearbox operated by the steering wheel. It was the 6-speed gearbox that was one of the weak points that affected the reliability of this car which, despite everything, achieved five victories in 1991 with Nigel Mansell and two with Riccardo Patrese, finishing second in the Manufacturers' World Championship. Mansell finished second in the Drivers' standings at the end of the season, with 24 points less than the champion Ayrton Senna (McLaren) and 19 lengths ahead of his team-mate Riccardo Patrese. The Williams FW14 was equipped with control traction and active suspension, the development of which began in 1985. It was fitted with the Renault V10 3,493 cm³ engine. Made with a carbon fiber and honeycomb frame, the front and rear suspensions were push-rod type. The total weight was 505 kg.
