The McLaren MCL33 was the first in the history of the British Formula 1 team to use the Renault powerplant. The French engine took the place of the Honda, after the not particularly profitable three-year period 2015-2017. Despite this change of course, the expected results did not arrive. This therefore suggested that the main problems had to be identified in the chassis. Among the novelties of this car, the mandatory introduction of the Halo. To guide it during that year were Fernando Alonso, author of a fifth place in the inaugural race that took place in Australia, and the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne. The McLaren MCL33 was equipped with a Renault V6 90 ° turbo hybrid engine of 1600 cm³, with KERS energy recovery system and additional electric units MGU-K and MGU-H, whose maximum power totaled 950 hp overall.
