For the 1992 season Alfa Romeo developed a car that was finally competitive against the competition of the BMW M3, after several seasons in which the 75 Turbo Evoluzione had defended itself as best it could, without ever reaching the levels of its major rivals. Derived from the 155 Q4 and compliant with the Superturismo regulations, the 155 GTA had an engine derived from that of the Lancia Delta (1995cc with 400hp at 6500 rpm), all-wheel drive and a particularly efficient aerodynamic package. The car competed in the 1992 Italian Superturismo Championship, demonstrating all its competitiveness and beating the M3s. At the end of the season, the 155 GTA took a total of 17 victories out of 20 races, with Larini, Francia, Nannini and Tamburini in the first four places in the standings. In 1993 the regulations changed and the 155 GTA did a few more races in the S1 class, before being used in hill climbs.
Nicola Larini, a highly capable driver present in the Formula 1 circuit, was hired by Alfa Corse for the 1992 Superturismo season. Larini did not disappoint expectations and won the championship, confirming in the following years his relationship with Alfa Romeo in DTM.
